Following our post in June, “Uncertain future – Current uses, users and facilities of the Sawyers Hall College site” http://wp.me/p2dr6s-8B, we have kept an eye on how Essex County Council (ECC) have been allocating the site which is under their freehold and that we, as Council tax payers, are funding. As we reported before, at the time there were multiple users of the location and we wondered whether this would change when Becket Keys free school was allocated the front section of the site.
The new school are now the leaseholders of Blocks 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9 and those who were formerly housed in those buildings are still, to our knowledge, with Becket Keys as their landlords.
We are grateful to the ECC press office for confirming the latest position and providing a statement this week regarding use of the remainder of the site.
The Council confirms that Faces kids club and Havering College continue to use the parts of the site that they occupied before September’s changes. They also confirm that, as part of the 2009 agreement, Shenfield High School have the right to use teaching rooms in the Jack Petchey Building (Block 4).
We also have conformation that Prospects College are no longer using the site but that vocational provision may still develop for Brentwood’s students after all:
“Prospects College were occupying part of the site and working jointly with Sawyers Hall College to deliver construction skills courses, so when Sawyers said it was closing, Prospects withdrew too. We understand that Havering College is working with local Brentwood schools to develop the potential for further vocational provision in the area, building on its successful Hair and Beauty provision called ‘the Lanes’ which is located on the site.”
ECC have advised that we should contact Havering College directly for further detail. We have sent a mail to this effect and will make further enquiries with a view to keeping Brentwood’s residents up to speed. Watch this space.
